Green Beans

This is almost Kenya’s signature horticultural product. Different specs grow in different regions, the very extra fine of course preferring the lowland, hot areas, while the rather long and ‘fat’ bobby bean thriving in the highlands.

The market prefers a pod that is devoid of somewhat similar defects, be it extra fine or the extremely bobby bean. So is it with quite a number of defects to which both beans are prone. The smaller the pod is, the more prone it is to defects both before maturity and after harvest, partly the reason why the smaller the bean is, the higher its value in the market.

In comparison to peas, beans are a more delicate product, and handling therefore becomes a very key factor in ensuring consistency in delivering the very best quality.

We can most certainly confirm that post harvest handling is for green beans the most sensitive stage. Poorly handled or mishandle green beans will hardly make it to day 4 in the market, compared to a possible shelf-life period of 14 – 21 days.
